The man had ordered his meal at Tashas, a restaurant in Rosebank, on Thursday when he was gunned down while waiting for his food.
Two gunmen walked into the famous restaurant just outside the Zone at Rosebank and fired several shots at the man before calmly walking away to a getaway car that sped off.
A restaurant manager who witnessed the incident said: “It was the most terrifying experience to hear so many gunshots and see people running in all directions to take cover.”
He said the killing was more likely to be a hit than a normal robbery because the men targeted one customer who had just ordered his food. “No one else was injured besides many shots fired.
“The gunmen probably came for that customer and left seeing that they had accomplished their mission.”
The posh upmarket restaurant was reduced to being a crime scene with many police, cordoned tape and a body lying under the tables and chairs.
One waitress who was visibly traumatised said they waited for the body to be taken away by pathologists before they started welcoming new customers back into the restaurant.
Those who didn’t know what had happened were shocked to see the police tape although they went ahead and ordered their meals.
Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Sello confirmed the incident and said the police are searching for suspects.
Colonel Sello said reports suggest that an Asian man was sitting with two men at the restaurant when two other men wearing masks entered the restaurant and went straight to the victim, shooting him multiple times before fleeing the scene.
“The motive of the murder is unknown at this stage,” said Colonel Sello.
