Tebogo Mangena was sentenced to 20 years in jail for the attempted rape and kidnapping of his friend by the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court in Limpopo on Wednesday.
The 29-year-old was sentenced to five years in jail for one count of kidnapping and 15 years for two counts of attempted rape. The sentences will run concurrently.
The court heard that the victim was at home on the evening of 23 October 2022 when Mangena phoned her to ask her to go out with him.
The victim then said she went with him, and along the way, he took out a knife and threatened to kill her.
She added that he then grabbed her by her neck and told her to undress. He pushed her to the ground, but she managed to free herself and run away.
The victim was saved by her parents, who responded to her call for help.
Limpopo police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said cases of attempted rape and kidnapping were opened and transferred to the Polokwane family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit for investigation.
The accused was arrested a week later, on 30 October.
