Manchester City owner, Sheikh Mansour will cover the travelling costs for supporters making their way to Portugal for the UEFA Champions League final on 29 May.
Because of Covid-19, Portugal is one of the few countries UK citizens are able to travel to, so the cost of plane tickets there has inflated drastically, and many fans have expressed doubt over whether they can afford to go.
But the club’s billionaire owner has stepped in and offered to pay for the flights of all 8,000 fans.
“Pep Guardiola and the team have had such a remarkable season and their reaching the Champions League final after a very challenging year represents a truly historic moment for the club,” Mansour said.
“Having as many fans as possible at the match is very important to us.”
Khadldoon Al Mubarak, the chairman of the club, said the fans face many problems, both financially and logistically, as they have been told that they will have to leave the country the same day the final is being played.
“Hopefully, His Highness’ initiative allows the majority of our attending fans to focus on enjoying the day rather than worrying about how to manage the travel costs,” he said.
Mansour has a net worth of R308 billion. He bought the club in 2008 and has invested billions to get them this far.
