Had her hands not been covered with blood, the girlfriend would still be on the run.

The 23-year-old was stopped by neighbours as she left her shack on Tuesday, carrying bags.

Resident Oupa Mahlangu said they had heard screaming from the couple’s shack in Lethabong, east of Tshwane, and became suspicious when the girlfriend came out of the shack with bags and her fists dripping in blood.

He said it looked like she was running away.

“We were right because as soon as we approached her, she dropped her bags and tried to flee but we caught her and took her bags to the shack where we found her boyfriend lying on the floor unresponsive,” he said.

He said an ambulance and police were called to the scene.

“The boyfriend was declared dead on the scene and police left with the girl. She told us that she found an ‘I love you’ message on her boyfriend’s phone and decided to beat him up but said it was not her intention to kill him.”

Mahlangu said the couple were known for fighting almost every day.

“We were used to their fighting. We even asked for their parents’ phone numbers so that we could call them to intervene but they refused to give us the numbers. It is sad this has ended like this,” he said.

Boschkop Police spokesperson Constable Yeroboam Mbatsane said a 23-year-old woman was arrested and appeared in court on Thursday.

He said the woman faces a charge of murder.

“It is suspected that the woman found messages on her deceased boyfriend’s phone that led them to fight,” he said.

The girlfriend remains in custody for further investigation.
