Gauteng police have arrested one of three men allegedly responsible for the Monaco Tavern shooting incident that happened in Mamelodi in July.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Mavela Mavela Masondo, said the 25-year-old has been on the list of police’s most wanted suspects.

He was arrested in Mamelodi by the Tshwane Anti-Drug Unit and Mamelodi Combat Team on Thursday.

Masondo said the suspect who was caught in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition is also linked to several cases including car hijacking, murder, attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

In July three gunmen stormed Monaco tavern in Mamelodi East and shot a patron.

The gunmen walked in wearing balaclavas, pulled out guns and shot into the air to disperse patrons in the club that was crowded.

At the time of the shooting, a patron told Scrolla.Africa that the shooting looked like a hit.

“They shot into the air to make us lie down and went straight to their target,” he said.

Colonel Masondo said police have been conducting an investigation and looking for the people responsible for the shooting until they pounced on one of the suspects in Mamelodi.

“The search is ongoing for the two suspects that are still on the run,” he said.

He said the arrested suspect is expected to appear before the Mamelodi Magistrates Court on Monday, 28 November.
