As learners across South Africa celebrate their matric results, learners at Ribane-Laka High School in Mamelodi have even more to be happy about.

The school is the top-performing school in Mamelodi and has achieved a 96% pass rate.

Of the 292 learners who sat for the exam at the school, only nine failed.

An impressive 177 learners achieved bachelor passes, 83 got diploma passes and 23 got higher certificates.

Nkhensani Gigagaba was the top learner at the school, achieving six distinctions.

She attributed her achievements to good teachers at the school.

“Our teachers are the best. I wish every learner had the privilege of such teachers. They don’t mind knocking off at 6pm in the evening while trying to make a learner understand a lesson. I’m grateful to them,” she said.

The school celebrated by parading around their area, where there are two more high schools and a primary school.

Principal Martha Mngoma said they did it against all odds.

“Covid hit while these learners were in grade 9. On top of that, they had to study with constant power cuts and because our school was old and dilapidated, the Department of Education moved us into containers while they were building us a fancy new school.

“But despite all these challenges our learners made it,” she told Scrolla.Africa.

Mngoma said they couldn’t have continued with their culture of being a top school in Mamelodi if it had not been for everyone who came on board.

“Parents were amazing with their support. We have passionate hardworking teachers and are very lucky that our learners are committed to keeping this school on top,” she said.
