Losing their midfield star, Mamello ‘Jabu’ Makhabane, poses a serious challenge for JVW Girls Football Club.

“It’s a blow to any team to lose any player, especially a player of Mamello Makhabane’s calibre with her international experience,” coach Ciara Picco told Scrolla.Africa.

“But we will find a replacement for her until she recuperates.”

The Banyana Banyana Star, who has garnered over 100 caps, has played every game for JVW Girls Football so far this season. She has scored two goals in her debut club campaign.

According to reports on Twitter, Mamello fractured her wrist in the match against UWC. She was rushed to hospital as she was in serious pain.

JVW Girls Football club lost 3-1 to University of the Western Cape in the Hollywoodbets Super League on Saturday at UWC Stadium.

“This is an opportunity for the youngsters to step up and fill the void,” Picco said.

“Thankfully, we have many players who can come through and fill those big shoes.”

The coach confirmed that Jabu underwent surgery on her wrist in Cape Town and will be discharged soon.

Picco added that it’s too early to tell when she will be able to play as she is expected to go through a rehabilitation process.

Picco’s charges face Tshwane University of Technology Ladies FC on Sunday at Tsakane Stadium. Kick-off is at 5pm and the match will be live on SABC1.
