Lorch leaves Sundowns for Morocco loan deal

  • Thembinkosi Lorch is set to join Morocco’s Wydad Athletic Club on loan after struggling for game time at Sundowns.
  • The move reunites Lorch with his former coach Rulani Mokwena, who helped him score 11 goals last season.

Mamelodi Sundowns star Thembinkosi Lorch is packing his bags for Morocco. He’s joining Wydad Athletic Club on a five-month loan that could be extended.

The clubs have shaken hands on the deal. All that’s left is for Lorch to sign the papers and pass his medical tests, FarPost reported.

The talented former Bucs player will land in Casablanca on Friday to seal the deal. He’ll team up again with his old coach, Rulani Mokwena.

Mokwena, who used to coach both Pirates and Sundowns, moved to the Moroccan giants at the start of the season after leaving Sundowns.

It was Mokwena who brought Lorch to Sundowns in January 2024. The coach believed in him, playing him in 24 games, where Lorch netted 11 goals and set up four more.

But since Mokwena left, things haven’t been great for Lorch. He’s only played six times this season.

The move gives Lorch a chance to play in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup under Mokwena.

Wydad, known as the Red Castle, are chasing the league title. They’re 10 points behind leaders RS Berkane with 11 games to go.

They last won the league in 2021/22 but had a tough time last season, missing out on African club competitions.

Now sitting third, they’re still hoping for a late title push. They’ve strengthened their team by signing Morocco’s top goalkeeper, El Mehdi Benabid, from AS FAR Rabat.

Lorch, known for scoring big goals, will boost their attack. He’ll join another South African, Cassius Mailula, who’s on loan from Toronto FC.

More South African players are heading to North Africa. Khanyisa Mayo plays in Algeria for CR Belouizdad, while Elias Mokwana is at Tunisia’s Esperance.
