Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena said he got a tearful phone call from Thembinkosi Lorch after a controversial live video of him embracing and dancing with two women on Instagram.

Lorch’s DStv Premiership title celebrations attracted controversy when the livestream showed him partying with the two women, apparently under the influence of alcohol.

In an interview with Andile Ncube on MetroFM, Mokwena described Lorch’s emotions.

“He phoned me, and he was in tears. And that broke me, for sure,” Mokwena said.

“Because I’m close to my players, when my players are crying and are emotional, I get emotional, and I cry, and I feel their pain too. And that’s how close I am with them.”

Despite saying he was disappointed over the incident, Mokwena said he felt sorry for Lorch.

“Like everybody else, Lorch is human. Like me, who makes mistakes, who is imperfect. I’m probably even more imperfect than him and I probably make more mistakes than him,” he said.

Mokwena also spoke about the bigger responsibilities professional footballers have as role models.

“We also have to understand the role we hold in society – that says ours is to inspire and educate and serve. We’ve got a bigger role than just what people think,” he said.
