Jurgen Klopp’s farewell tour saw a youthful side win their first piece of silverware of the season as the Reds were crowned Carabao Cup champions on Sunday.
Virgil Van Dijk’s 118th minute extra time winner was enough as the Dutchman led from the front to seal a 1-0 win over a shell-shocked Chelsea side.
With over ten first team injuries, Jayden Danns (18), Bobby Clark (19) and James McConnell (19) all featured for the Reds as the Merseyside giants fielded three teenagers — the most in a League Cup final for any side since 2007.
As was the case in 2022’s two cup finals between the teams, there would be no separating Liverpool and Chelsea in 90 minutes.
From VAR drama, disallowed goals, offside flags and goal-line technology — the game had absolutely everything.
Deputising for the injured Alisson, Caoimhin Kelleher starred in goal for the Reds — making an array of vital saves across the 120 minutes of action.
In the final seconds, when it seemed as though penalties would loom, Van Dijk’s header found the back of the net to bring home Liverpool’s record-extending tenth League Cup title against all odds.
