Liverpool thrash fierce rivals United 7-0 in historic rout

By Razeen Gutta

Records were completely shattered on a day where football heritage was rewritten at Anfield.

Liverpool beat their fiercest rivals Manchester United 7-0; and that too in the most breathtaking fashion imaginable.

The high flying United were brought down to earth as they were humiliated at Anfield, the fortress of their oldest adversaries.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds dominated the ball at a buzzing Anfield, up for the return to form after the high-profile defeat to Real Madrid at their prized venue.

Liverpool were in control but failed to test David de Gea in the opposition goal until late on in the first half. And once they found the target, they would not miss it again.

Cody Gakpo put them in front before the break; and at half-time it could still go either way. That was prevented instantly as Erik ten Hag’s team talk at the midway point went completely out the window.

Shortly after the break, Darwin Nunez made it two and Gakpo got his third on the 50 minute mark to make it 3-0.

Mohamed Salah looked the best though, running freely in one of his greatest performances in a red shirt.

The Egyptian heard his song echo around the Kop as he scored the fourth and sixth goals to become Liverpool’s all-time record goalscorer in the Premier League.

It was déjà vu for United fans as well, who at the sight of a shirtless Salah in front of the Kop, prematurely booked the first ticket out of Merseyside.

Nunez got the fifth goal and then it was a fairytale ending for Roberto Firmino in his final game against United as well, scoring the final goal.

United, on the other hand, were every bit as torrid as Liverpool were scintillating. Their much-celebrated back line was calamitous.

Bruno Fernandes’s performance was described as a “disgrace” by pundit Gary Neville. The skipper went down unconvincingly after minimal contact with a Liverpool player before demanding to be substituted after they scored their sixth.

Liverpool recorded their biggest ever competitive win against Manchester United while the Red Devils suffered their heaviest ever competitive defeat in the club’s history.

It was a night for the history books for sure, and will heavily dent United’s unlikely title push.
