A 48-year-old woman has been arrested for the murder of her teenage son for allegedly cutting off his head. The 18-year-old teen was wheelchair-bound.

Police were called to a murder scene next to a local tavern in Leshikishiki village, Lebowakgomo on Friday, where they found the body of the son with his head on the ground.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe said initial police investigations into the murder led to the arrest of the victim’s mother.

“This is a heart-breaking incident that has deeply affected our community and the SAPS family. While the police are duty bound to protect and serve the public, parents have a critical role to nurture and protect their children,” said Hadebe.

“This horrendous act is strongly condemned. The law will take its course without fear or favour.”

Police confiscated a knife at the scene which the suspect allegedly used to cut off the victim’s head.

Hadebe said a case of murder has been opened. The motive behind the gruesome attack remains unknown.

The suspect will appear in the Thabamoopo Magistrate’s Court.
