  • Three men fired shots at the busy rank using an AK-47 assault rifle. All three have been arrested.
  • A nearby primary school was evacuated, and bullet casings were found outside the Spar supermarket.

A shootout broke out between a white taxi and a red car near Meyerton Taxi Rank while schoolchildren were on their way to class.

One learner, who was walking to Dr Malan High School, was caught in the crossfire and hit by a stray bullet.

The learner was rushed to hospital for treatment.

Gauteng Vaal Traffic and Emergency Services confirmed that three suspects opened fire at the busy rank using an AK-47 assault rifle.

Eyewitnesses said they heard several shots fired randomly while commuters and learners screamed and ran for cover.

Bullet casings were found near the Spar supermarket close to the taxi rank, showing how dangerous and unpredictable the shooting was.

A nearby primary school on Shippard Street was evacuated as a precaution. Parents were asked to collect their children.

Midvaal Mayor Peter Teixeira said they were aware of the incident and that the South African Police Service had brought the situation under control.

“The South African Police Service is currently on the scene and has brought the situation under control.

“Please note that sections of Meyer Street (up to the KFC traffic circle) and Mitchell Street have been temporarily closed to ensure ongoing investigations.

“We urge all residents and commuters to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement authorities,” he said.
