Dorcus “Didi” Lekganyane, a well-known academic and respected scientist, has died after being stabbed to death allegedly by her partner.
Police in Bramley, Johannesburg, found Dorcus’s body with multiple stab wounds after responding to a domestic violence call.
Her 48-year-old partner, who tried to commit suicide, was also found at the scene and is now in hospital under police watch.
Dorcus, 32, was stabbed to death on 11 July.
Once her partner is out of hospital, he will face murder charges.
Didi was recently recognised as one of Mail & Guardian’s 200 Young South Africans in the “Climate Change and Environment” category for her important work.
Her family released a statement saying she was a beacon of light, and many people will mourn her loss.
Police spokesperson Noxolo Kweza confirmed the murder investigation and said: “Her partner will be charged with murder and will appear in court soon.”
