Lando Norris was crowned as the Formula One world drivers’ champion on Sunday, ending Max Verstappen’s four-year reign.
The McLaren driver finished third in the season-closer in Abu Dhabi, behind race winner Verstappen and teammate Oscar Piastri, to claim the title by two points.
The 26-year-old became Britain’s first world champion since Lewis Hamilton in 2020 and McLaren’s 13th drivers’ champion.
Norris’s path to glory was not easy, with Verstappen and Piastri pushing him to the limit.
“I just kept pushing, I wanted to fight to the end. I am happy, it has been a long journey with McLaren. It feels amazing, I know now what Max feels like a little bit. I want to congratulate both Max and Oscar, I’ve enjoyed it, it’s been a long year,” he said post-race.
“I haven’t cried in a while. I didn’t think I would cry, but I did. I want to thank my mum, my dad, they’ve supported me since the beginning,” he added.
Norris’s victory marks a remarkable season for McLaren, who also secured back-to-back constructors’ titles in Singapore.
McLaren CEO Zak Brown praised Norris and Piastri’s efforts, saying “What an effort, Lando and Oscar, what a fantastic season!”
