KZN news bites:KZN premier shocked by Malawians’ living conditions

Celani Sikhakhane brings you KwaZulu-Natal’s latest news.

Pietermaritzburg: KZN Premier Thami Ntuli has emphasised that the temporary shelter housing Malawian nationals in Pietermaritzburg cannot be a long-term solution, citing safety concerns and the growing costs of maintaining the facility. He called on the business community to assist with transport to ensure the safe and orderly return of Malawian nationals. The Office of the Malawi Consulate confirmed that plans to secure buses for the repatriation process are in place.

“No one must be harmed. Whether they are from Africa or beyond our continent, every person deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and humanity. We must ensure that this process is managed peacefully and responsibly,” said Ntuli.

Kingsmead: UKZN students were among the biggest winners at the annual KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union Awards held at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium last weekend, claiming several top honours from the 2025/2026 season.

Kamran Naraidu scooped both Player and Bowler of the Season in the Dolphins Academy. Dylan Hullet received Batter of the Season in the Premier League, and Blake Simpson was named Batter of the Season in the Second Division. UKZN Cricket Club Manager Kershan Govender also walked away with an award for outstanding achievement at the University Sport South Africa Games held in Grahamstown last year.

Kranskop: The remains of Sihle Makhaya, who died in Russia in March, have been successfully repatriated to his home in Kranskop.

In April, his wife Sibonile Ndwandwe asked KZN MEC for Transport and Human Settlements to help the family bring his body home. She said Makhaya (44) was allegedly lured to Russia with the promise of a lucrative job by Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla.
