Sihle Mavuso presents the latest news from KwaZulu-Natal.

Pietermaritzburg – The National Professional Teachers’ Organisation of South Africa has welcomed the KZN Education Department’s move to advertise teaching positions rather than using an internal app, which it says has not been working and is frustrating. The union said educators registered on this database for years have been overlooked for permanent employment. “The filling of these posts has been open to corruption and nepotism. These allegations have never been addressed by the department. Young, qualified educators have been filling SGB (school governing body) posts that pay very little, and they have no benefits like their state-employed counterparts,” the union said.

New Germany – The former head of the Magalies Water Board in North West has been appointed the new CEO of the Umngeni-Uthukela Water Board in KwaZulu-Natal. Sandile Mkhize will start his duties on 1 July. The chairperson of the utility, advocate Vusi Khuzwayo, said that with Mkhize at the helm, Umngeni-Uthukela is set to deliver on its stakeholders’ expectations and effectively live up to its mandate of providing sustainable water and sanitation services in KwaZulu-Natal.

Newcastle – A Newcastle man who killed his uncle and other relatives, claiming that they performed a ritual using his late mother’s body to get rich, has been sentenced to life in prison. The Pietermaritzburg High Court also found Mthunzi Sithebe guilty of attempted murder. In court, it emerged that Sithebe visited a traditional healer regarding his problems. The healer told him that he was struggling in life because his mother’s body was used by his uncle and other relatives to get rich. He got angry and went back home to kill them.

eThekwini – The ANC-run eThekwini municipality says it welcomes the section 154 intervention announced on Thursday by Thulasizwe Buthelezi, MEC for cooperative governance and traditional affairs. The city added that it welcomed support from other spheres of government as long as it was for the benefit of the people of eThekwini. It said the council would engage further on the department’s support to ensure alignment with the presidential eThekwini Working Group and other support programmes, such as the city support programme from the national Treasury.

Ulundi – The National Freedom Party (NFP) has introduced another change in its Zululand municipal executive committee. The party has instructed councillor Sizwe Hadebe to resign from the exco and return to the Abaqulusi local municipality. In a letter dated 27 June and signed by Themba Dladla, the party’s administrator, Hadebe was told that the move, among other reasons, “also caters for the government of local unity, which the NFP has been negotiating with the IFP”.
