Mariannhill – Three suspects who allegedly hijacked a vehicle in Mariannhill in Durban have been killed in a shootout with police. In a statement, police say the vehicle was loaded with home appliances. They say their investigations traced the hijacked vehicle to the Klaarwater hostel in Mariannhill. During the car chase, the suspects started firing at the police and a shootout ensued. The suspects were found in possession of two firearms and several rounds of ammunition.
Port Shepstone – The remains of ANC Umkhonto Wesizwe combatants were welcomed during the uManyano church service held in Port Shepstone under the Tolomane Mnyayiza Region on the KZN South Coast. The ANC Women’s League held a service with the family of Bafana Duma to receive his remains, finally brought home to rest in peace after he died in exile and was buried outside of his birth country. Duma’s remains were brought home along with that of his eThekwini Region comrades Judson Khuzwayo, Sipho Mdletshe and Luckboy Ngubane. In September, the remains of 42 South African freedom fighters that perished in exile in Zimbabwe and Zambia were repatriated to their homeland.
Nquthu – Three suspects in the murder case of a 65-year-old granny and her two-year-old grandchild will appear in Nquthu Magistrates Court on several charges, including two counts of murder, arson and attempted murder. Last week, Busisiwe maSithole-Ntombela and her grandchild were killed with an axe and set alight in their house at kwaNkobe Village in Nquthu. A Grade 6 granddaughter who survived the ordeal is still in hospital. MaSithole-Ntombela was an ANC activist in her area near Magogo. The ANCWL is planning mass action on Friday to oppose the bail application of the three suspects.
Madadeni – The Madadeni Regional Court has sentenced a 24-year-old man to life imprisonment for the repeat rape of an 11-year-old girl in November last year. The complainant lived in the same house together with her cousins, her granny and her granny’s boyfriend (the accused). On 2 November 2023, the complainant was alone at home with the accused, as her granny was at work and her cousins were at school. She did not go to school because her exams were over. On this day, the accused called her to his room and raped her. The next day, when they were alone again, he raped her again. On both occasions, he threatened to hurt her if she told anyone about what he had done. The following day when the complainant realised that she would spend another day alone with the accused, she decided to tell her cousins about the rapes. The matter was reported to the police and the accused was arrested.
