Celani Sikhakhane brings you KwaZulu-Natal’s latest news.
KwaXimba – The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) is strengthening its support in the eThekwini region — and it’s using sport to do it. The party hosted a massive soccer tournament in KwaXimba village, Ward 1, over the Easter weekend. The event followed MKP’s historic win in Ward 110, where it recently snatched control from the DA in the City of Durban. The tournament was organised by MKP member of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature and former Ward 1 councillor Musa Mkhize. Teams of all ages took part in the MKP Cup, boosting the party’s visibility and support in the area. Hundreds of residents and MKP members came out to enjoy the matches and celebrate the Easter holidays. KwaXimba, in the west of Durban, is one of the largest wards in eThekwini and has become a hotly contested area between the ANC and MKP.
Amaoti – Four of Amaoti’s most wanted gang members, linked to at least 10 murder cases since June 2024, have been arrested. Police caught the suspects in Cato Manor on 19 April following an intelligence tip-off. The team included Crime Intelligence, Inanda Detectives, Durban Metro Police and others. Officers found the men with two firearms, ammunition, and suspected stolen items — including laptops and phones. The suspects are believed to be linked to over 20 murder and attempted murder cases in Amaoti and Inanda. They are due to appear at Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
KwaDukuza – The DA in KwaZulu-Natal says the ongoing water crisis in KwaDukuza is crippling the economy and hurting local communities. The party is protesting a proposed 13.5% water tariff hike by the iLembe District Municipality. DA leaders plan to hand over a memorandum of demands to the ANC-led municipality. The protest will be led by provincial leader Francois Rodgers, MPL, and other top DA figures.
