Durban – The South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco), an alliance partner of the ANC, has told its members that the seven-day amnesty for those who have openly backed parties other than the governing party has expired. Any member found to be backing another party will face disciplinary action. When the civic organisation expelled former president Jacob Zuma almost two weeks ago, it announced its constitution had a new interpretation which bars members from backing other political parties because Sanco is in alliance with the ANC. Sanco also informed its members that five of its senior leaders who have joined the MK Party have been expelled from the organisation. The former leaders are Thabani Luthuli, Lucky Hadebe, Pearl Gasa, Bheki Mlotshwa and Sabatha Mzimela.
Pietermaritzburg – King Misuzulu kaZwelithini has formally recognised Amabhinca (Zulu traditionalists) as an important component of Zulu regiments and given his blessings to Ngizwe Mchunu to lead the regiment that promotes traditional values. In officially opening the KwaZulu-Natal legislature in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday, the king also instructed the co-commanders of the Zulu regiments, Prince Vanana Zulu and Induna Sipho Mhlongo, to work with Mchunu and Amabhinca.
Durban – The eThekwini municipality has announced that it will soon introduce smart policing systems for its Durban metro police force by requiring the use of body cameras and dashboard cameras on their vehicles, among other measures. The municipality said the measures are aimed at improving transparency. Meanwhile, the city said it would apply the no-work-no-pay rule to the about 500 employees who engaged in an illegal strike on Tuesday. It said acts of lawlessness will not be tolerated.
Dumbe – The National Freedom Party (NFP) claims that the Independent Electoral Commission has given the party the green light to contest the upcoming general elections. This follows years of leadership squabbles that saw the IFP splinter party unable to contest elections pending the question of who the party’s rightful leader was. However, in a sudden turn of events, the NFP claimed that the IEC has recognised the leadership of Ivan Barnes, who was elected in Durban in December. The recognition is on condition that no court order is sent to the IEC stating otherwise.
Pietermaritzburg – The chairperson of the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal, Siboniso Duma, is once again getting flak for allegedly “overshadowing” Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube during the opening of the KZN legislature on Tuesday in Pietermaritzburg. Duma, who is also the leader of government business in the legislature and the MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, drew the ire of some social media users when he accompanied Dube-Ncube to observe a police salute before the arrival of King Misuzulu.
