Celani Sikhakhane brings you the latest KwaZulu-Natal news.

Ladysmith – Supporters of IFP president Velenkosini Hlabisa celebrated on Thursday when uThukela district chairperson Mbuzeleni Cyril Mkhize was finally appointed deputy mayor after nearly two years of delays. Hlabisa’s supporters sang victory songs in celebration. Mkhize’s appointment had been delayed, with claims that the “Triple K” faction, which supports KZN Premier Thami Ntuli as the next IFP president, was behind it. The deputy mayor position became vacant after EFF councillors resigned in February last year when Julius Malema ended the party’s relationship with the IFP.

Durban – Police seized over R15-million worth of fake luxury clothing and accessories in a raid on Thursday morning. The operation targeted shops selling counterfeit goods on Dr Pixley kaSeme Street. Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said those arrested were foreign nationals, and their legal status was being checked.

Mandeni – Church leaders in KwaZulu-Natal are asking God’s help to stop road deaths. On Thursday, they gathered at the N2 near Mandeni, where eight teenagers died in a crash last week. They laid wreaths and prayed for the victims.

Durban – KZN Premier Thami Ntuli announced plans on Thursday to ensure the matric exams go smoothly, even in bad weather. He said the SAPS and SANDF are ready to help deliver and collect exam papers. Ntuli assured the public that the province is serious about keeping the exams fair and secure.
