Durban: Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema has mocked the MK Party, joking that if it wins eThekwini, its mayor could be fired for taking former president Jacob Zuma a goat instead of cattle.
Malema was speaking at the Economic Freedom Fighters eThekwini Ground Forces Forum at Durban Station over the weekend ahead of the November local government elections.
He used the joke to attack what he described as instability inside the MK Party.
Malema said Economic Freedom Fighters member Hlengiwe Khawula had previously asked whether the party should take back blankets given to elderly people after receiving fewer votes than expected.
“I told her that don’t do that, they will see their mistake,” Malema said.
He said party members should instead return to voters and convince them that they made a mistake by supporting unstable political parties.
“Tell them that you took my blanket and went to vote for people who are changing each other like they are changing socks every day.”
Malema questioned whether a party he considered unstable could provide stable leadership in eThekwini.
He joked that a mayor could be removed the next day “just because he arrived late in Nkandla or he gave ubaba [Jacob Zuma] a goat instead of cattle”.
“Then they fire him. Here in the EFF we don’t govern by the feelings of the President,” Malema said.
Two Congolese nationals arrested at summit
Pinetown: National Assembly member Fadiel Adams’s criminal case has been transferred to the Regional Court after investigators completed their work.
Adams appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
He faces three counts of fraud and two counts of defeating the administration of justice.
During his previous appearance, when he was granted bail, the case was postponed to allow investigators more time to complete their work.
The state confirmed on Friday that the investigation has now been finalised.
The case was transferred to the Regional Court and postponed until 11 September 2026.
Adams remains out on bail under the conditions previously imposed by the court.
Durban: Two Congolese nationals were arrested on Saturday after trying to enter a summit venue using accreditation issued to someone else.
The pair were stopped at an access control point after officials discovered that their identities did not match the accreditation they presented.
They were immediately arrested.
The two face charges of fraud, impersonation and breaking the Safety at Sports and Recreational Events Act by entering a designated area without authorisation.
Their identities and the circumstances surrounding the attempted entry remain under investigation.
Their arrests follow another security incident involving a foreign national.
Earlier in the week, a Zimbabwean national was arrested after reportedly trying to obtain accreditation by presenting himself as a performing artist to gain access to the summit venue.
The Zimbabwean national faces a charge related to being illegally in South Africa.
