KZN news bites: Mahlaba tells schools to defend ANC

Celani Sikhakhane brings you KwaZulu-Natal’s latest news.

Nongoma – KwaZulu-Natal Legislature’s Chairperson of Committees and former ANC provincial treasurer Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba has called on teachers to remind schoolchildren of what the government has achieved in the past 30 years. Speaking at Bumbano Senior Primary School in Nongoma on Wednesday, Mahlaba said there is a false narrative spreading that the ANC-led government has done nothing to improve the lives of the poor. He told teachers to speak on government successes, especially in education. “There’s a myth being pushed that nothing good has been done in the past 30 years,” said Mahlaba. “But today children are getting free education and nutrition because of this government.” Mahlaba visited the school as part of the KZN Legislature’s outreach programme and handed over school uniforms to pupils.

Durban – KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Sport Mtomuhle Khawula says he is saddened by the death of Durban City footballer Sinamandla Sgora Zondi. Zondi died shortly after playing a match against Milford FC in the ABC Motsepe League on Tuesday. Details around his death remain unclear. Khawula described him as a committed and talented player.

KwaDukuza – The DA says it fully supports Ilembe residents who held a peaceful protest on Wednesday over ongoing water supply issues. The protest was sparked by a proposed 13.5% hike in water tariffs. The DA submitted a memorandum to the municipality, giving it 14 days to respond with solutions to the crisis.
