Westville: The former KZN Education Minister says she will never forget the pain she went through due to the nutrition crisis that hit all public schools while they were at the Mathematics Summit. Mbali Shezi-Fraser made the revelations for the first time during an interview on Friday when she opened up about the stress she went through due to the nutrition crisis. “Just imagine! I was at the Mathematics Summit preparing the kids to improve their marks on that subject, then boom the nutrition scandal. This is the crisis I will never forget in my era as Education Minister,” said Shezi-Fraser. She even got emotional about the issue but she praised the support she received from school principals and the then Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga. She says that what was more stressful was the cabbage that was circulating all over that it was the only food that was supplied to the kids. She said what helped her at that time was to face the crisis by herself and not to be defensive.
Durban: The Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal congratulates John Steenhuisen on accomplishing his mission that he set out to achieve when he was first elected leader in 2019. KZN DA Chairperson Dean McPherson made the remarks on Thursday after Steenhuisen’s announcement that he is stepping down. McPherson said that John has played an important role in the DA’s trajectory in KwaZulu-Natal from supporting their efforts to win their first municipality with an outright majority to going into the Government of Provincial Unity.
Mtubatuba: The Mtubatuba Regional Court has sentenced a 27-year-old man to life imprisonment for the murder of his five-year-old niece, which was committed in December 2024 at Enkanjini, Hlabisa, in northern KwaZulu-Natal. On 31 December 2024, the accused’s family members gathered at a family home for New Year’s Eve celebrations. At approximately 11pm, the accused was seen entering the room where the child was sleeping and carrying her outside. When the family later went into the yard to mark the New Year, they saw the accused carrying a white sack walking towards his shack which was located nearby. They also realised that the child was missing and began searching for her.
