Sihle Mavuso presents the latest news from KwaZulu-Natal.

Mtubatuba – Five months after the devastating storm that gutted the Umkhanyakude district in northern KwaZulu-Natal, some families are still struggling to recover and have nowhere to stay. The 10 families are located in the Machibini area along the Mtubatuba-Hlabisa-Nongoma road. Zandile Nyembe, a local community activist, said when the floods struck, a team from Mtubatuba municipality and the disaster unit of the provincial cooperative governance and traditional affairs department visited the area. The 10 families were included in the list of those affected, but they were left out when park homes were delivered and installed as a temporary measure. Nyembe said it was devastating as the families that were left out were poor.

Pietermaritzburg – Unemployed educators in KwaZulu-Natal are getting together to demand that the provincial education department employ them. The group of educators have started a lobby group on Facebook to pressure Education MEC Mbali Frazer to attend to their issue. The educators said it was not fair for them to be unemployed when some schools have a shortage of teachers. They also want to know how the database of unemployed educators works as some teachers have not been assigned work since the database was started.

Newcastle – The ANC has raised concerns regarding by-elections being fought on Wednesday in three wards in Newcastle. The governing party claims it has uncovered voters who were registered using an address of a vacant plot in the township of Madadeni. The ANC has opened a case with the police and the Independent Electoral Commission to have the matter investigated. Official results for the three by-elections are expected on Thursday morning.

Ladysmith – The IFP-led Alfred Duma (Ladysmith) municipality has responded to a woman who uploaded a video on TikTok claiming that it owes her. The municipality said the allegations made on the video that the IFP-led municipality does not want to pay her are baseless and lack substance. The municipality said the then Indaka local municipality was led by the National Freedom Party at the time when the woman was awarded the tender and the municipality merged with the ANC-led Emnambithi/Ladysmith. The municipality also claimed that the issue of the payment was before the court and the reason it decided to defend the matter was that all documentation indicated that the project was completed and all her invoices were paid in full.

Jozini – The community of Bhambanana near Jozini is not backing down from its ongoing protest directed at the Umkhanyakude municipality for a clean and reliable water service. The community braved bad weather today to continue with its blockade of local roads to get the attention of authorities. The on-off protest has been going on for almost a month now.
