Durban: Women danced their way out of August as two of KwaZulu-Natal’s best known female DJs took over The Playhouse Theatre on Sunday.
DJ Cndo, whose real name is Sindisiwe Zungu, and DJ Happy Girl Ndlovu performed at the Greater is She All Women Concert.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sport, Arts and Culture hosted the event to celebrate women and their contribution to society.
DJ Cndo was among the women who broke into South Africa’s male dominated house music industry in the mid 2000s.
She helped open doors for other female performers, including DJ Happy Girl, who has since built a strong name in the entertainment industry.
Women of different generations packed The Playhouse for music ranging from maskandi and house to gqom and gospel.
The celebrations started at 5pm and continued until midnight.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Mtomuhle Khawula said women were not always given the recognition they deserved.
“Women are not always celebrated in the way they deserve,” Khawula said.
He said the department used August to “celebrate and honour women for the important role they play in our communities”.
eThekwini: The Democratic Alliance says 65% of its ward councillor candidates in eThekwini are new faces.
The party’s eThekwini mayoral candidate Haniff Hoosen announced the candidates at the Onomo Hotel in Durban on Monday.
The remaining 35% are current ward councillors who are returning.
Hoosen said the party consulted voters, communities and civic organisations before choosing its candidates.
He said the new group includes lawyers, financial professionals, project managers, community activists and people who previously belonged to other political parties.
Hoosen said the party wants councillors who can improve services, remain accessible to residents and change how the city is governed.
Pietermaritzburg: A 34-year-old man will spend life behind bars after being convicted of raping a 33-year-old woman with a mental disability.
The Pietermaritzburg High Court heard that the man and woman worked together.
He befriended her before raping her three times at their workplace between 2022 and 2023.
Her mother noticed a change in her behaviour and questioned her.
The woman told her mother about the rapes and the matter was reported to police.
She was later referred to the Edendale Thuthuzela Care Centre, where she received medical and emotional support.
