Sihle Mavuso presents the latest news from KwaZulu-Natal
Margate – Eskom has fully restored power in most areas of KwaZulu-Natal which were affected by strong winds on Sunday night and Monday morning. However, some areas, including Hluhluwe, Nongoma, Paulpietersburg in Zululand, and Kamberg and Nagle Dam near Pietermaritzburg, are still off the grid. Efforts are also ongoing to restore electricity in the resort town of Margate.
Pietermaritzburg– The ANC and DA have secured all chairperson positions for portfolio committees in the KwaZulu-Natal legislature. The ANC took seven of the 10 positions and secured the chair of chairs position, which went to Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba, former MEC for sport, arts and culture and current treasurer of the ANC. The DA, as part of the government of provincial unity, received the remaining three positions.
Eshowe – The Umlalazi district municipality, along with provincial disaster teams and a team from the King Cetshwayo district municipality, is assessing the damage caused by wildfires in Eshowe. Mayor Queen Xulu reported that one person died when his house caught fire. The wildfires also damaged over 80 homes, vehicles, farms and livestock.
Ntuzuma – The township of Ntuzuma, north of Durban, experienced another unexplained water outage today. Similar outages were reported in Lindelani and Bester’s townships and briefly affected Newlands East, Parlock and Newlands West. While the eThekwini municipality restored services in these areas, Ntuzuma remains without water.
