KZN news bites: Drug users become criminals who attack women, MEC warns

Celani Sikhakhane brings you KwaZulu-Natal’s latest news.

uMzumbe: KZN Social Development MEC Mbali Shinga has warned that drug abuse is destroying young people’s lives and leading to gender-based violence. Speaking at an anti-drug campaign in uMzumbe on the South Coast on Thursday, Shinga said drug users hurt entire communities through crime and abuse. “We have a problem with drugs destroying our youth. When someone gets into drugs, that person affects the whole community with criminal activities and abuse. That’s why we’re working with traditional leaders and churches to fight drugs,” Shinga said.

Newcastle: Madadeni court has jailed drug dealer Mduduzi Kunene, 57, for 15 years with five years suspended. Hawks officers caught him on 11 October 2023 after getting a tip about drug dealing in Section 3, Madadeni. When police arrived, Kunene tried to run but was quickly caught. They found mandrax tablets and dagga worth about R112,560 at his home, plus R1,344 in cash from drug sales.

Glebelands: Five men who killed eight people at Glebelands Hostel in uMlazi have each been sentenced to eight life terms plus 15 years in jail. KZN Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Phumelele Makoba praised investigators for proving the June 2023 mass murder case beyond doubt.
