Greytown: Six farmers have died in Greytown after the vehicle they were travelling in was swept away in a flooded river on Thursday afternoon.

The workers were travelling from the Kranskop farming area to eMabomvini village, where they reside. The driver of their staff transport tried to cross the overflowing Mfenebude River, when the white Nissan bakkie was swept away.

All six people who were at the back of the bakkie are presumed dead.

On Friday, SAPS rescue teams found two bodies while four people are still missing.

The driver of the bakkie and the passenger escaped without injury.

The vehicle was found at the mouth of Mfenebude and Nadine River.

Pietermaritzburg: The Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr Kgosientsho Ramakgopa, announced in Pietermaritzburg the electricity tariff framework intervention aimed at stabilising and revitalising South Africa’s ferrochrome industry.

The announcement was made on Friday in Pietermaritzburg, where Minister Ramakgopa also announced that the intervention is aimed at saving over 3,000 jobs at ArcelorMittal, which was facing closure due to financial issues.

Ramakgopa announced a 3,000-megawatt plant by Eskom at the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone and the role of the KZN Department of Transport.

uMngeni: The uMngeni Municipality has officially lodged papers with the High Court in relation to the ongoing dispute over the supply of electricity to Hilton and the surrounding areas. The municipality says that this marks a crucial step in fighting for the rights of Hilton residents and businesses.

“This legal action follows a prolonged period of uncertainty and service challenges experienced by residents and businesses in Hilton. At the heart of the matter is the continued supply of electricity to the Hilton area by the Msunduzi Municipality. The uMngeni Municipality maintains that Msunduzi Municipality is acting unlawfully by supplying electricity within the Hilton area. As confirmed by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA), Msunduzi does not hold a valid electricity distribution licence for the area of Hilton. The absence of such a licence raises serious legal and regulatory concerns regarding the legitimacy of the current supply arrangement,” the Municipality said.
