Pietermaritzburg: The Democratic Alliance at the KZN legislature has raised concerns about the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health’s formal response to the Standing Committee on Public Accounts following the Auditor-General’s 2024/25 Regularity Audit Report. Tim Brauteseth of the Democratic Alliance at KZN legislature says the department’s admission of a qualified audit opinion confirms what the Democratic Alliance has long warned – governance and financial management within KZN’s health sector are in crisis. The report highlights serious issues including misclassified immovable assets, R2.34-billion in irregular expenditure and R1.75-billion in unpaid accruals, many of which exceed the 30-day payment term required by law. These failures point to systemic weaknesses in leadership, oversight and compliance.

KwaNgcolosi: Police in KwaZulu-Natal have arrested five suspects aged between 21 and 25 years for murder, attempted murder and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition at KwaNgcolosi. On 21 October 2025, members of Crime Intelligence Unit gathered information on suspects who were wanted for the murder of Sibongiseni Mkhize and Squmane Gasa who were shot and killed on Wednesday, 18 January 2023 at Embo area. The information was relayed to the Provincial Task Team who went to KwaNgcolosi for an operation. Upon arrival, police found five men who were inside the house. During the search, police recovered a firearm and ammunition. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were planning to commit a murder just before the police caught them. The suspects were arrested and they were positively identified as being linked to several housebreaking cases in the area. They appeared before the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

Addington: The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health has launched an investigation into the alleged mistreatment of a woman during labour at Addington Hospital in Durban. This follows a social media post claiming that the woman was forced to walk to the labour ward while in labour, resulting in her baby falling onto the floor. The post was accompanied by a photo of a woman wearing a hospital gown standing in the corridors of the hospital.
