Sihle Mavuso presents the latest news from KwaZulu-Natal.

Durban – An eThekwini municipality cemetery supervisor who was attacked while at work with grave diggers on Friday has died. During the attack, a municipal car was stolen but was later recovered. It is unclear whether the attack was linked to the ongoing illegal strike by municipality employees who are members of the South African Municipal Workers Union.

Greytown – A former ANC Youth League leader in KwaZulu-Natal has criticised the governing party’s step-aside policy. Thami Ngubane, who until November 2021 was the mayor of Umvoti (Greytown) municipality, said the policy in its current form is a kind of painkiller solution that shifts the effects of the problem in the immediate sense but doesn’t erase it. Ngubane proposed that people in the ANC who work at cross purposes with the objectives of the National Democratic Revolution must lose their membership after being convicted.

Nongoma – King Misuzulu kaZwelithini has called on all members and friends of the Zulu Nation to observe a minute of silence at midday on Tuesday 12 March to honour the third anniversary of the passing of his father, King Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu. He said King Zwelithini was a symbol of unity and peace in KZN and will always be cherished in the hearts of millions of Zulus. He said observing a minute of silence at work, school or home will be a fitting tribute to the memory of the much-loved and admired king.

Pietermaritzburg – The Abantu Batho Congress (ABC) has chosen its president, Philani PG Mavundla, to be its premier candidate for KZN. Mavundla, the mayor of Umvoti municipality, will now lock horns with the likes of DA candidate Chris Pappas and the IFP’s Thami Ntuli. Currently, the ABC has councillors in several KZN municipalities and has a coalition pact with the ANC in some of them.

Dundee – The date and the prizes for this year’s Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi ultra marathon have been announced. The run in honour of Buthelezi, the longest-serving Zulu traditional prime minister who served three Zulu kings, will take place on 5 May. It is the last qualifying race for those who wish to enter the Comrades Marathon. The Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi ultra-marathon winner will pocket R100,000. This year’s qualifying run is an up-run, starting from Dundee and ending in Nquthu in northern KZN.
