Sihle Mavuso presents the latest news from KwaZulu-Natal.

Umzimkhulu – A former member of the ANC Youth League’s national executive committee who hails from Umzimkhulu in southern KwaZulu-Natal has dumped the ANC and joined the Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) Party led by former president Jacob Zuma. In his resignation letter, Mkhuseli Mlengane, who was a member of the governing party for 20 years, said: “Like a good dancer, there comes a time to leave the stage.” He added that he was leaving with a heavy heart as the current leadership of the ANC has behaved strangely. He said he was a victim of the organisation he once loved.

Amaoti – Taps have once again run dry at the Mnqobokazi shanty town, north of Durban. President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to conduct a door-to-door campaign in the area today. Scrolla.Africa visited Mnqobokazi around 11am on Friday and found the taps dry. However, there were signs that there had recently been water. A resident said they had some water in the morning, but it later went off. The area, together with other northern townships, has been battling a water crisis for years.

Durban – The Health Unit of the eThekwini municipality has closed down the popular Frendo’s Chicken fast food outlet on Dr AB Xuma (Commercial) Road in the Durban city centre after it violated several health laws and did not have records of food handler training. The outlet also had no pest control certification, a compromised drain system, an inadequate ventilation system and its storeroom was being used to sleep in.

Phoenix – The Hawks arrested three men from Phoenix for the 12 February 2024 shooting of a man and his 10-year-old son while at a robot along Old North Coast road near Redhill in Durban. The wounded man was airlifted to hospital while his son was not hurt. Two months later, the Hawks were able to crack the case when they arrested Yasseen Essop, 35, Ryne Naidoo, 27, and Manuel Naidoo, 45. The first two were charged with attempted murder while Manuel has been charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Amajuba – The Amajuba district municipality in northern KZN said it has concluded the first leg of formulating its budget by hosting Integrated Development Plans roadshows. This is months before the 2024-25 budget starts in July. In its roadshows, the municipality has allocated a large chunk of its budget to solve its water and sanitation woes in the Dannhauser and Emadlangeni local municipalities, where it is the water services authority. The district municipality has also budgeted to reduce the loss of water in the two local municipalities.
