KZN News Bites: ANC fails to repair dangerous Umlazi sinkhole

Sihle Mavuso presents the latest news from KwaZulu-Natal.

Umlazi – Residents of Umlazi township near KwaManyadu Mall say that the failure by the ANC-run eThekwini municipality to repair a sinkhole and a damaged footbridge is putting their kids’ lives in danger. The sinkhole in one of the roads near the mall opened up during the April 2022 floods and it has remained like that even though dangerous live cables have been exposed. A resident said a contractor came to the site, did some digging and later left. As a result, the water from the sinkhole now flows directly into people’s homes.

King Shaka Airport – The Dube Tradeport at King Shaka Airport says it has made plans to manage disruption during the planned 24 April strike by 112 workers from the Nehawu labour union. The union called the strike after a breakdown in negotiations over giving employees a 13th cheque. Dube Tradeport said they have agreed with the union to have a designated picketing area, which will guarantee access to the Tradeport and ensure that the airport precinct is not obstructed.

eThekwini – An ANC councillor from eThekwini municipality who was heard threatening Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) workers for not coming out to conduct a “door-to-door” litter campaign has defended his remarks. Mzo Mngonyama’s comments were made via a voice note he shared in a WhatsApp group. He said the EPWP workers were asked to conduct a door-to-door campaign under Operation Good Hope but refused. He claimed the operation entails EPWP workers moving house to house to drop litter bags. In the voice note, Mngonyama said: “We have no shortage of ANC volunteers in the wards. You can come one day and see them in action.”

Nkandla – The Nkandla municipality is moving forward with its plans to become a major goat-breeding and export hub in southern Africa. On Wednesday, the municipality handed over start-up equipment and goats to local cooperatives to boost their goat farming projects. This follows last year’s research by the King Cetshwayo district municipality which found that Nkandla has suitable weather and vegetation for goat farming. The district municipality asked the local municipality to match its contribution to the cooperatives so that they could start the farming project.

Ndwedwe – The principal of Sogidi Primary School and one of his teachers died in a car accident while they were on their way to a workshop in the iNdwedwe education centre. Two other teachers were injured and rushed to hospital in a critical condition. The school is located in the Nsuze circuit, some 200 kilometres from Stanger.
