KZN has spoken: MK party must rule

The people of KwaZulu-Natal have voted overwhelmingly for the establishment of a new government in their province.

They have chosen Jacob Zuma’s new party, the Umkhonto Wesizwe party, to lead them into a new dawn.

The MK party has won 45,93% of the votes in KZN – compared to the ANC’s 17,63% and the IFP’s 16,29%.

In this scenario, logic dictates that the MK party must be given the first opportunity to try and form a government in KZN.

It is disturbing, then, to hear that the parties that lost the election are trying to gang up on the MK party, effectively ganging up on the will of KZN voters, and constitute their own government.

Such a government could provoke the people to openly rebel against the government and could even spark violence that would be worse than the July Riots.

Theoretically, the ANC, DA, IFP and the EFF could snatch victory from the jaws of defeat as  together, they have won 50.12% of the provincial vote.

Such a coalition also has other friends like the ACDP, FF Plus, NFP, the PA and a string of smaller parties that could get a majority even without the EFF.

Francois Rodgers, the leader of the DA in KZN, said an MK party majority would not be in the interests of good governance in the province.

“Our greatest achievement is that we were able to stop an MK majority in KZN.

“From our analysis, had it not been for the intensity of our campaign and turnout of DA voters, the MK may very well have got a majority in the province.”

Rodgers said the DA would want the EFF out of such a coalition.

“The DA in KZN will remain committed to keeping out the MK party and EFF from government. This is a non-negotiable for us and those that voted for the DA.”

The MK party is unlikely to be good at managing finances, being led by Zuma, who presided over nine years of looting of state resources in this country as president.

As it is, it is not clear who will be the premier of KZN. Zuma holds all the cards in the party.

But the voters must be allowed to make mistakes, and the will of the people must be respected.
