  • Ebenezer Family Church International in Sikhawini has set up a business desk bringing experts from construction, catering and retail to upskill struggling congregation members.
  • Reverend Ambrose Msiza says he wants church members to stop looking for jobs and start creating them, with the National Youth Development Agency already on board to support young entrepreneurs.

Reverend Ambrose Msiza looked at his congregation and saw people being crushed by an economy that was not working for them. He decided his church would stop praying about it and start fixing it.

Ebenezer Family Church International in Sikhawini township, outside Mpangeni on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast, has launched a business desk. It brings in experts from different sectors to upskill members and help them build businesses from scratch. No more waiting for jobs that are not coming.

“We want our members not to be job seekers any more but to be employment creators and play a vital role in the growth of the economy,” said Msiza.

Msiza is a business person himself. That experience convinced him that the right expertise, delivered inside the church, could change the financial trajectory of his congregation. The desk covers construction, catering, fashion and retail.

The launch drew the National Youth Development Agency, which advised young members on available business opportunities. Msiza said young people are at the heart of what he is building.

“Young people are the future of this country,” he said.

“We want to uplift them to be the future employers rather than the job seekers of tomorrow.”

The programme lands at a time when rising costs are hitting township households from every direction. For a congregation already under pressure, this church has decided that economic survival is not somebody else’s problem to solve.
