The possibility of Formula 1 returning to South Africa became increasingly likely when the Kyalami circuit was added to the 2023 provisional calendar.
If Grand Prix motor racing returns to Kyalami it would be the first time in Africa since 1993 when Alain Prost took first place ahead of Ayrton Senna.
De Telegraaf reports that South Africa was added to the calendar on an interim basis.
While Kyalami may be included, the Belgian and French races may be dropped from the calendar due to contractual considerations. As things stand, Monaco remains on the calendar for the moment.
Formula 1 will be making its return to Las Vegas for the first time since 1984 with a race on the infamous strip set for 18 November.
Bahrain is once again the opening race while Abu Dhabi also retains their spot as the season finale.
The Miami Grand Prix brought major success for Formula 1 in an event deemed the sport’s very own “Super Bowl”.
The Miami race will be moved to May with initial plans of running it after the Canadian Grand Prix to reduce the sport’s carbon footprint. This plan has however yet to be approved.
Nothing has been confirmed, but Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali who visited the Kyalami race circuit last month, said: “Discussions are progressing and I think we’ll have an answer soon.”
