- Kwaito star Doc Shebeleza has died at 51 after months of illness.
- The 90s hitmaker inspired many artists and later helped upcoming musicians through his Amaha organisation.
Kwaito legend Doc Shebeleza has died at the age of 51, just days after being discharged from hospital.
Family spokesperson Shakes Mavundla said Doc, whose real name was Victor Bogopane, died at 10.30am on Thursday.
“He was discharged from the hospital on Monday. Doctors told him to return for check-ups next week. But unfortunately he passed on,” he said.
Mavundla said Doc did more than just make hit songs – he changed lives through his organisation African Musicians Against HIV-Aids (Amaha).
“He helped the old who were struggling with accessing their grant money, bought school uniforms for children, and bought wheelchairs for those who could not afford them. South Africa has lost a good man,” said Mavundla.
Doc became famous in 1996 when his first album “S’Kumfete” came out on cassette. Songs like “Kum’nandi”, “Ebumnandini” and “Ghetsa Ghetsa” had everyone dancing.
He later started the male group Amaskumfete, known for hits like “Tsipa Tsipa”.
His music inspired a new generation. In 2014, rapper Cassper Nyovest named a hit song after him.
The kwaito star influenced many of today’s musicians including Mandoza and Mapaputsi.
He leaves behind nine children.
Doc’s death comes just days after fellow musician Winnie Khumalo also died at 51.
