Siya Kolisi and the Springboks were nominees at the recent Laureus Awards ceremony in Madrid, Spain, but did not win in their categories.
The Springboks were contenders for the Team of the Year, which was won by the Spanish women’s football team.
Siya Kolisi was nominated for the Laureus World Comeback of the Year after his remarkable recovery from a knee injury to play in the Rugby World Cup and his leadership, but gymnast Simone Biles took home the award.
Notable winners included Novak Djokovic, who won the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award for the fifth time, and Aitana Bonmatí, who was awarded the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year.
She became the first footballer to win in this category, and she also accepted the Laureus World Team of the Year Award on behalf of her national team, following their Fifa Women’s World Cup win.
The ceremony was not only a celebration of the past year’s sports achievements but also highlighted the responsibility of the Laureus Sports Academy to use sport as a force for good, reflecting the values of Nelson Mandela, its founding sponsor.
