Gary Kirsten has been named as Pakistan cricket’s new white ball coach ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup in June this year.
The former Proteas opener bagged the role alongside former Australian pacer Jason Gillespie, who will take the reins of the test side.
It is the first time that Pakistan have employed separate coaches for different formats of the game.
“Both Kirsten and Gillespie are famous and experienced coaches and their appointment confirms the trust the international community has in our team,” Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Mohsin Naqvi told the media in Lahore.
Kirsten led India to the ODI World Cup in 2011 and now believes Pakistan should challenge at upcoming tournaments.
“Understanding the current state of the team and charting a path towards our desired goals is paramount,” the 56-year-old said.
“Winning global events, while challenging, remains a significant objective. Whether it’s the upcoming tournament in June or events in the future, achieving success in these competitions would be a remarkable feat,” he added.
Kirsten is currently coaching the Gujarat Titans at the IPL and will join up with the Pakistan squad in England next month.
