Kenya is running short of condoms – and sex workers are being forced to wash them out and use the same ones again.
The Kenyan government provides 150 million free condoms each year but appears to have gravely underestimated the sexual appetite of its citizens.
Samuel Kinyanjui, the country programme director of AIDS Healthcare, forecast requirements to be at least 263 million for the year to June 2023.
Condoms in Kenya cost $1 (R18) for three, which makes having sex an expensive habit for the average person.
Sex workers rely on free condoms handed out by the government and funded by groups such as the United Nations Population Fund.
Because of the shortage, sex workers are having to wash out and reuse condoms on clients, a local television news station reported.
This has led to fears of a surge in HIV infections and unwanted pregnancies because washing the condom damages the latex. It also doesn’t remove bodily fluids from the condom.
