Martin Wanyonyi has made history as the first person with albinism to be elected as a member of parliament in Kenya.

The 37-year-old from the Ford Kenya party won the Webuye East parliamentary seat with 11,600 votes compared to Wanjala Iyaya’s 5,393 votes.

Wanyonyi has been championing the awareness of people living with disabilities since he entered politics in 2011.

Addressing the local press after being declared the winner, Wanyonyi thanked Webuye East voters for believing in him.

“The election is historic because it’s the first time that a person with albinism has been elected through the vote.

“I want to assure the people of Webuye East that I will deliver on my promises,” he said.

He added that he was ready and determined to deliver on voter expectations.

Kenya took to the polls on 9 August to elect the president, deputy president, governors and MPs.

According to media reports, Kenya’s deputy president William Ruto is ahead of opposition leader Raila Odinga with 51.25% in the tight presidential race.

The electoral commission has until Tuesday to declare a winner.
