Kagiso rapist gets three life sentences

Justice has finally been served in the case of one of the most cruel and brutal individuals convicted of rape in Gauteng.

Mcebisi David Modimokwana has been sentenced to three life sentences by the Johannesburg High Court sitting in Palmridge.

Mcebisi terrorised women in Kagiso, Soweto and surrounding areas by kidnapping and raping them at gunpoint.

Less than six days after being released on bail after his first arrest, he did it again. He was rearrested for raping a second woman at gunpoint after he had kidnapped her.

Investigations by Detective Warrant Officer Mpane Mpiko from the Krugersdorp Police Station linked Mcebisi to two more rape cases. In total, Mcebisi had four reports of rape and victimisation.

Scrolla.Africa published a report after he raped a victim in 2021 in which she said the law had failed her after her perpetrator was granted bail.

The National Prosecuting Authority took interest in the article, and, following a public outcry, Mcebisi was denied bail after his second arrest.

On 10 August 2021, he kidnapped his first recorded victim and took her to one of his mother’s houses in Protea Glen, Soweto, where he repeatedly raped her.

Speaking to Scrolla.Africa from her rented room in Kagiso, the 35-year-old victim said the man had kidnapped her from a chesa’nyama.

“He drove around wildly and showed me two firearms. On the way to the house, he fired several shots in the air,” she said.

Following the sentencing on 9 February, the victim who was a witness during Mcebisi’s trial said she is happy she took the bold step of opening a case against him while other victims were afraid to.

Speaking to Scrolla.Africa on Wednesday, she said: “He seemed untouchable and he boasted that he had money and would never get arrested,” she said.

“I am happy that the law has won and many women have been saved from him. I want to see him die in jail and only come out for his burial.
“I thank the Scrolla.Africa team for intervening and making sure he didn’t get the second bail after his second arrest,” she said.
