Jurgen Klopp has announced that he will be stepping down as manager of Liverpool FC at the end of the current season.
Klopp, who took charge of the club in October 2015, said he is “running out of energy” and feels it is time to make this decision.
During his time at Liverpool, Klopp has led the team to numerous victories, including triumphs in the Uefa Champions League, Premier League, Fifa Club World Cup, FA Cup, League Cup, Uefa Super Cup, and the FA Community Shield.
In a heartfelt statement, Klopp expressed his strong connection with the team, the staff, the club, the city and the fans, emphasising the difficulty of his decision.
He revealed that he had informed the club about his decision in November.
Klopp’s assistants, Pepijn Lijnders and Peter Krawietz will also be leaving the club alongside him.
Under Klopp’s leadership, Liverpool secured their first league title since 1990 in the 2019/20 season and claimed the Champions League trophy in the preceding season by defeating Tottenham Hotspur in the final.
The news of Klopp’s departure has been met with surprise and admiration. Chris Carline, the grandson of legendary Liverpool manager Bill Shankly, compared the impact of Klopp’s exit to that of his grandfather’s retirement 50 years ago.
John Gibbons from The Anfield Wrap podcast described Klopp’s decision as a “major shock.”
