- Jomo Sono says Hugo Broos has already proved himself and should not be blamed for Bafana’s Afcon exit.
- Sono says Bafana missed clear chances against Cameroon and could have changed the game.
South African football legend Jomo Sono has spoken out in defence of Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos.
This comes after Bafana were knocked out of the Africa Cup of Nations in the last 16 by Cameroon.
Broos has faced heavy criticism since the loss, but Sono says the coach does not deserve the attacks.
“Can the so-called analysts leave Broos alone, please?” said Sono. “It’s non-achievers who say Broos must go, people who’ve done nothing for South African football.”
Sono said Broos has already shown what he can do. He reminded fans that Broos won Afcon with Cameroon in 2017.
He also pointed out that Broos has guided Bafana back to Afcon and into the 2026 Fifa World Cup.
“Yes, we went out early, but we missed three clear chances against Cameroon,” said Sono. “If we scored, we’d be telling a different story.”
Bafana will play at the 2026 World Cup in North America. They are set to face Mexico, South Korea and a European qualifier.
Sono said the opening match against Mexico on June 11 will be tough. Still, he believes Bafana can compete if they regroup and adjust their approach.
Sono also said Broos should consider bringing back striker Bongokuhle Hlongwane. Hlongwane has been left out despite doing well in the United States.
“If Lyle Foster gets injured or loses form, we’ll be found wanting,” said Sono. “Hlongwane must be in the conversation.”
