Sithembiso Zungu, Johannesburg City Council chief whip, was injured in a shooting incident on Monday morning.
A Rand Water executive was shot and killed during the incident.
The incident occurred while Zungu attended a Rand Water school donation event in the south of Johannesburg.
He is currently receiving medical treatment.
Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the suspects entered the hall and opened fire before escaping.
“Two people were declared dead on the scene while three others were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds. The motive of the shooting is unknown at this stage,” Nevhuhulwi added.
Margaret Arnolds, the Speaker of the Council, confirmed the incident but did not provide specific details.
She said that more information would be released later.
Arnolds also asked the public not to spread false information and confirmed that a media statement would be issued when the time was right.
Rand Water wrote in a statement that one of its executives was among the dead.
Its spokesperson, Makenosi Maroo, said the incident happened during one of Rand Water’s back-to-school campaigns.
“Rand Water’s policy prohibits the organisation from releasing the employee’s name without the family’s consent. As an organisation, we ask the media to please respect the highly sensitive nature of this incident,” Maroo said.
