Janine bows out in style as Banyana qualify for Wafcon

By Razeen Gutta

Banyana Banyana legend Janine van Wyk hung up her boots on a high as she clocked her 185th appearance as South Africa progressed to Wafcon 2024.

The 36-year-old has the most international caps of any player on the continent, with her 185 appearances for Banyana beating that of Egypt’s Ahmed Hassan.

Veteran Van Wyk led the side out for one final time as South Africa defeated Burkina Faso 2-0 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville.

Her experience is sure to be missed at the showpiece event, and manager Desiree Ellis wished her well as she looks to pursue a coaching career.

“I also want to say congratulations to Janine for a long career. I think this is well deserved. She’s given her all and always wore her heart on her sleeve, and it couldn’t have happened to a more deserving person,” Ellis said post-match.

“Good luck and welcome to this space. It’s not easy, but we wish her all the best and, hopefully, her coaching career is as successful as her playing career.”
