As expected, Nigeria’s pride and joy, the Ikorodu Bois, have nailed their spoof video of the Netflix sensation, Squid Game.
The group of boys, made up of siblings and friends, have found international fame making low budget yet highly creative comedy versions of actual music videos.
Well, their videos began as spoofs of music videos but their work soon covered movies, TV shows and anything else that has dominated popular culture. And they now have produced another work of art, imitating the thrilling Korean series about a series of death games using pots and crates as props.
In the 2:09 long video titled “If Squid Game was shot in Ikorodu”, one of the boys plays the giant doll which appears in the first episode of the show, Red Light, Green Light. In this game, players can only move when the doll shouts “green light”. If a player moves during “red light”, they get killed on the spot by machine guns pointing out of the walls.
In Ikorodu Bois’ rendition, which featured more than their usual number of actors, the scene was reproduced brilliantly. They used a large iron pot holding cash in midair with ropes. This is a spoof of the giant glass piggy bank filled with prize money in the show.
The Ikorodu Bois have jumped on a meme, whereby content creators on social media make a video imagining Squid Game set in another part of the world.
Other gimmick videos include “If Squid Game was shot in Africa”, which replaced guns in the first game for witchcraft, making a player disappear into thin air if they lose.
The unbelievably successful series is already Netflix’s most watched production, at 111 million views. The next most-watched show is the first series of Bridgerton, which has been watched around 82 million times.
The streaming service has projected it to reel in over $900 million, according to company performance metrics.
