IFP youth leader’s bodyguards die mysteriously

The secretary general of the IFP Youth Brigade, Mlungisi Mabaso, is living in fear after the puzzling death of his two bodyguards, who died three days apart.

First, Sebenzani Cele from Maphumulo in northern KwaZulu-Natal was rushed to hospital in Johannesburg after he was found at his home last week crying and complaining of stomach pains. He later died in hospital.

Three days later, Mabaso’s other bodyguard, Phakamani Madinana from Hlabisa in KZN, was found dead with bullet wounds in an open field in Soweto.

Mabaso told Scrolla.Africa in Durban on Monday that he is confused and frustrated by their deaths.

“I don’t know what exactly is happening in my life because these people were part of my life. They were my protectors who drove me everywhere I went.

“I am fearing for my life because I don’t know what is the motive behind this.”

Mabaso said he had been advised not to attend the funerals of the two men because he might be targeted.

Nonetheless, he attended Cele’s funeral on Saturday 27 January and said he would attend Madinana’s funeral this coming Saturday.

Mabaso, the former City of Johannesburg MMC for Housing, is now an IFP councillor in the city.
