Congregants at a church in Makonde Shadani village in Thohoyandou, Limpopo, ran for safety when a 45-year-old woman was shot and killed by her husband at a service on Saturday night.
The suspect entered the church while the congregation was worshipping, walked up to his wife and fired multiple shots at her without saying a word.
Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the victim was declared dead at the scene.
“The suspect, whose age is unknown, fled the scene in a silver-grey Toyota Corolla. While the motive behind this appalling incident remains unclear, domestic violence can not be ruled out,” he said.
Limpopo SAPS commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe condemned the shooting and called on the police to urgently track down and arrest the suspect.
