The Department of Home Affairs says it has received an official request to check the citizenship of 2024 Miss SA contestant, Chidimma Adetshina.
In a post on X on Tuesday, Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber said the department received the request from the pageant organisers on Monday, including Adetshina’s consent.
The controversy around Adetshina’s participation comes from her birth to a Nigerian father and a South African mother of Mozambican descent.
“Based on this voluntary request and the required consent, we are working to verify and compile the necessary information,” Schreiber said.
He added that any issues found will be handled according to the law, and if everything is in order, they will inform the requesters and the public.
The 31-year-old was born at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto and raised in Pimville.
She then moved to Cape Town where she lived with her parents.
Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie told Patriotic Alliance members in a Facebook Live post that he would apologise if Adetshina has South African citizenship.
“I don’t know if this lady is South African or not. But as a leader, I must investigate. We are busy investigating and the media is on top of me. So, if the media’s job is to bring out that she was born in South Africa, show us the paperwork that she’s South African.”
